We’d like to present you another star to hit the stage in our gala in Teatro Principale @teatroprincipalalicante in Alicante on 22 July – the incredible Denis Matvienko @matvienko_ballet_master.
Natalia Makarova once described Denis as “Baryshnikov, Nureyev and Godunov rolled into one”. However true it may seem, he is the one and only Denis Matvienko. A graduate of the Kyev State Ballet School, Denis has always been ahead of everybody else. In three years, he received three grand prix at ballet competitions in Luxembourg, Budapest, and Nagoya. He has been a principal dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine, Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky Theatres and a guest principal with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, La Scala in Milan and Paris Opera. At different stages of his career, he held the posts of Artistic Director of the ballet company of the National Opera of Ukraine and ballet company of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.
He seems to be made for the roles of strong men – warriors and princes – decisive, handsome and precise. Nevertheless, if you see him in contemporary choreography, you’ll be surprised how fluid and placid he may turn out to be. Just check out the piece named “Romeo and Juliet” that he danced alongside his wife Anastasia.
